The VISTEC scholarship is not a separate competition. Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology (VISTEC), a graduate research institute in Wangchan Valley, Rayong, Thailand, gives what it calls a “full scholarship” to every student it admits to its Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs. You apply for admission through the VISTEC Admission System, and if you are admitted, the scholarship comes with the place. Thai and international applicants are both welcome. The VISTEC Student Admission 2027 period runs from 1 October 2026 to 15 February 2027. On that final day, the application fee must be paid by 23:59 Thai time (UTC+7).
Derrick Ochieng for Scholarship Tally reviewed VISTEC’s Admission page, the VISTEC Admission System (home, Scholarship and Supports, Terms and Conditions, qualification pages for each school, and the admission FAQ), and VISTEC’s Scholarship and Support and Academic Programs pages on 14 October 2026. This guide was prepared with AI assistance and checked against those official VISTEC pages. Scholarship Tally is independent of VISTEC and cannot assess individual applications.

What this scholarship is (and what it is not)
VISTEC states on its Admission System that “All accepted students will receive education and research supports,” and its admission FAQ answers the question “Do all admitted students receive scholarships?” with “Yes. VISTEC provides full scholarships to all admitted students.” The default award is what VISTEC’s main site calls the “VISTEC scholarship by PTT and Sponsors.”
Four points save wasted effort:
- Admission is the competition. There is no separate scholarship application form. The admission application includes a Statement of Purpose, and VISTEC says “Admission is highly competitive.” It does not publish the number of places or an acceptance rate.
- It is only for M.Eng. and Ph.D. study in four science and engineering fields. There is no bachelor’s, Master of Science, or online program.
- It is not international-only. Some websites present it as a scholarship “for international students.” VISTEC’s FAQ says “Both Thai and international students” are welcome, and VISTEC says it gives full scholarships to all admitted students.
- “Up to” figures are caps. “Up to THB 5 million” describes the maximum value of the package over your studies, not a sum paid to you. VISTEC does not give a US dollar value, and Scholarship Tally does not convert one.
Who it is for, and who it is not for
A good fit if
- You hold, or are finishing, a degree in chemistry, physics, biology, materials, chemical, electrical, mechanical, or computer engineering, information technology, or a related field, and you want research-focused graduate training.
- You want a Ph.D. with time abroad. Every Ph.D. student receives THB 1 million to support up to one year of research abroad, and strong Ph.D. students can later apply for a second year (see below).
- You want funding with no service bond after graduation.
- You are comfortable living on a residential research campus outside Bangkok. VISTEC is in Wangchan Valley, Rayong, in the Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation (EECi). Its Scholarship and Supports page says “Weekly transportation services connect students to Bangkok, nearby shopping malls, and local attractions.”
Not a fit if
- You want a bachelor’s degree, a non-engineering master’s, or a distance or online program. VISTEC’s FAQ says “All programs are on-site.”
- You need confirmed funding for airfare, health insurance, or visa costs. VISTEC does not say whether these are covered, so confirm with the admission team before deciding.
- You want to live in Bangkok during your studies. This is a Scholarship Tally fit note based on the campus location, not a VISTEC rule.
Check before you apply
- Dormitory fees. Two official pages disagree (details in the next section). Ask the admission team if your budget depends on the answer.
- A degree outside science or engineering. You may apply, but you must make a strong case (see Eligibility).
What the full scholarship covers, and what it does not
VISTEC’s Admission System and Scholarship and Supports page list the same package, quoted here as written:
| Item | What VISTEC says |
|---|---|
| Package | “Full scholarship for all students (up to THB 5 million) with no obligation after graduation” |
| Fees | “University fees are waived” |
| Housing | “On-campus Housing / Dormitory” |
| Stipend | “Monthly stipend up to THB 20K”; the main site gives “THB 15,000-20,000 per month” |
| Research | “Research budget support up to THB 500K” |
| Equipment | “Study/Education equipment support up to THB 30K” |
| Ph.D. abroad | “THB 1 million scholarship to support research abroad for up to one (1) year” for all Ph.D. students |
| Double degree | “Double degree programs with leading universities abroad (please inquire about specific programs)” |
VISTEC’s main site adds “funding to attend international conferences.” The FAQ summarizes the scholarship as covering “tuition, monthly living allowance, research support, accommodation, conference fee, overseas expenses, and other academic-related expenses.” VISTEC does not say what decides where your stipend falls within the THB 15,000 to 20,000 range, and it does not name the double degree partner universities.
Duration. The FAQ says the scholarship typically lasts 2 years for a Master’s and 3 to 5 years for a Ph.D., “depending on the chosen track.”
No bond. The FAQ says “There is no mandatory service requirement,” and the main site says support is provided “without any bond or obligation after graduation.”
Other Ph.D. awards. Ph.D. students “with excellent academic performance and good conduct may apply for the Royal Srimedhi Scholarship after enrollment” (listed as the Srimedhi scholarship on the main site). It adds THB 1 million, “allowing a total of up to 2 years of research abroad.” The main site also lists a VISTEC-RGJ Ph.D. scholarship for Ph.D. students selected by both VISTEC’s and RGJ’s committees. The official pages reviewed do not say when or how to apply for the VISTEC-RGJ scholarship.
The accommodation conflict
VISTEC’s own pages give two different answers about dormitory costs:
- The package list includes “On-campus Housing / Dormitory,” and the FAQ says on-campus dormitories “are covered by the scholarship except utilities.”
- The Student Dormitory paragraph on the Scholarship and Supports page says: “Students are responsible for the applicable accommodation and common area fees, as well as utility costs, including water and electricity, which are charged separately.”
What is certain: you pay for water and electricity. Whether any accommodation or common area fee is charged is unclear, so email [email protected] before you rely on free housing. First-year students share twin rooms; later years get single rooms.
Not stated by VISTEC
- Airfare or travel to Thailand.
- Health or medical insurance.
- Visa costs or visa support.
- A settling-in or relocation allowance.
- Separate amounts for tuition or conference funding (only the caps above are published).
If any of these decides whether you can go, ask the admission team before you apply. Do not assume they are included because the award is called a full scholarship.
Schools, degrees, and tracks
VISTEC has four schools: Molecular Science and Engineering (MSE), Energy Science and Engineering (ESE), Biomolecular Science and Engineering (BSE), and Information Science and Technology (IST). Each offers an M.Eng. and a Ph.D. Note that the degree title does not always match the school name.
| School | Degree title | Typical backgrounds (official qualification pages, condensed) |
|---|---|---|
| MSE | Materials Science and Engineering | Materials, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, polymer; materials, polymer, chemical, ceramic, metallurgical, or electrical engineering |
| ESE | Chemical Engineering | Materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics; polymer, ceramic, metallurgical, or electrical engineering |
| BSE | Biomolecular Science and Engineering | Chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, biology, physics, molecular biology, pharmacy, medical technology; chemical, biological, environmental, or mechanical engineering |
| IST | Information Science and Technology | Computer science, physics, mathematics, information technology; computer, mechanical, or electrical engineering |
Each qualification page also accepts “related” areas, so read your school’s page if your degree name is not listed.
Tracks. The M.Eng. is a 2-year program, either “Research Oriented Project” (IST calls it “Research Oriented Projects”) or “Research and Coursework.” The Ph.D. has 3-year and 5-year tracks, each in a research-oriented or research-and-coursework form. The FAQ says coursework-based programs “are designed for applicants from non-related fields, while research-oriented programs are for those with strong academic backgrounds,” and “The admissions committee determines the final track during interviews.” So you can state a preference, but the committee decides.
Curriculum documents. The curriculum PDFs for IST and BSE say they apply to students admitted in academic years 2022 to 2026; the MSE and ESE PDFs say 2025 to 2029. A 2027 version for IST and BSE was not posted when Scholarship Tally checked, so treat credit totals as a guide only. One more practical catch: on the IST qualification page, the “A2: Research and Coursework (2-year)” link opens a Chemical Engineering document from ESE. Ask the admission team for the correct IST file if you need it.
Eligibility requirements
| Requirement | What VISTEC says |
|---|---|
| Nationality | Thai and international applicants; no country list or exclusion |
| Degree level | M.Eng. or Ph.D. only |
| Final-year students | Final-year bachelor’s students may apply for M.Eng. or Ph.D.; final-year master’s students may apply for Ph.D. |
| Ph.D. with a bachelor’s | Possible: Ph.D. qualifications read “Completed or completing a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree”; the committee decides the track |
| Other fields | “Yes, you may apply,” but show a strong academic background in science, engineering, or a related field and convincing research motivation in your Statement of Purpose and interview |
| Applications | A maximum of 2 application forms; indicate your top preference |
| Not stated | Age limit, minimum grade point average (GPA), minimum English score, work experience |
Final-year students and degree proof. For the previous cycle, the FAQ required official proof of degree completion “as soon as it becomes available, and no later than 31 July 2026.” VISTEC has not published the 2027 date. Confirm the 2027 deadline with the admission team before you rely on it.
Applying to two programs. The FAQ says you may apply to “up to two programs” and must “select only one after the final decision.” Rank them honestly: you cannot take both.
Key dates
| Milestone | Date |
|---|---|
| Admission opens | 1 October 2026 |
| Deadline | 15 February 2027 |
| Closing-day payment | By 23:59 Thai time (UTC+7) on 15 February 2027 |
| Interview shortlist | 22 February 2027 |
| Interview and exam | 27 February 2027 |
| Late documents | Statement of Purpose and official English score by the interview day; recommendation-letter timing depends on the submission method |
| Result | 31 March 2027 |
| Program start | Not stated |
VISTEC shows one admission period with one interview date. No second round is stated. The 23:59 Thai time cut-off is the only hour VISTEC gives, and it applies to paying the fee on the final day; no separate cut-off hour for submitting the form is stated. Scholarship Tally’s advice, not an official rule: submit and pay at least a few days before 15 February 2027 so there is time to fix a payment problem.
VISTEC does not say whether the interview and written examination are online or on campus, or what the written examination covers. The FAQ page you may find online was written for the 2026 cycle, so its dates (including 15 February 2026 and 28 February 2026) are last year’s.
Required documents
| Document | When it is due |
|---|---|
| Curriculum vitae (CV) | At submission |
| Transcript | At submission |
| Statement of Purpose | Form downloadable in the system; may be submitted later, before the interview day |
| Two letters of recommendation | Online referee option: may arrive after the application deadline, before the interview day. Offline upload: blocked once the application deadline passes |
| English test score | Official TOEFL, IELTS, or CU-TEP result recognized by VISTEC before the interview date; any current score at application |
| Publications, awards, honors | Optional |
| Portfolio and other documents | Optional |
English scores. VISTEC does not publish a minimum score, but says “the Admission Committee will take the English test score into consideration.” Its Terms and Conditions strongly encourage attaching valid scores at application because they “significantly facilitate” screening. The 2026-cycle FAQ also accepted a signed Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter on official letterhead for the application stage, while still requiring an official score later. Do not rely on an MOI letter alone.
Letters of recommendation. The FAQ describes an online option, where your referee receives a system email and can submit even after the application deadline, and an offline option, where the system blocks uploads once the deadline passes. Both still need to be in before the interview day. If a letter never arrives, the FAQ says “your other qualifications should be sufficiently strong for the committee’s consideration in order to be shortlisted.”
Application fee and payment
- Who pays: “An application fee of 20 USD (or equivalent in Thai Baht) per application is mandatory for applicants of non-Thai nationality.”
- Waiver: the fee is “automatically waived for any applicant (regardless of nationality) who has successfully graduated from an accredited educational institution located in Thailand.”
- When: within 24 hours of submission; on 15 February 2027, by 23:59 Thai time.
- What counts as submitted: an application is “officially submitted only when all mandatory fields are completed, required documents are uploaded, and the application fee (if applicable) is confirmed as paid in full.” The status shows “Pending for Payment” until VISTEC verifies the payment, then “Application Submitted.”
- Two applications: both fees can be paid in one transaction, with the same slip attached to both Application IDs.
- Refunds: “All application fees are strictly non-refundable.” Bank transfer fees are yours, and an underpayment needs a second transfer.
- Late payment: after the 24-hour window, email [email protected] with proof of transfer; VISTEC unlocks the application manually within 48 hours after verification.
The public pages do not show the payment method or bank details; these appear inside the system.
How to apply, step by step
- Choose one or two programs. Read your school’s qualification page and curriculum plan, and look at the faculty research so your Statement of Purpose can name the work you want to join. Contacting a supervisor first is not a stated requirement.
- Book an English test early. You need an official TOEFL, IELTS, or CU-TEP result before the interview date, which is 27 February 2027.
- Arrange two recommendation letters early. Confirm your referees’ email addresses and choose a submission method. With the online option, the system emails your referee. With the offline option, upload the letters before the application deadline, because uploads are blocked afterward.
- Prepare your CV and transcript. These are the documents to have ready at submission.
- Watch the official video tutorials. The Admission System home has three: How to Sign Up, Fill the Application Form, and Complete the Application Form.
- Register and complete the form. Use the registration link at the end of this guide. All fields must be completed before you submit; you can create at most 2 application forms.
- Pay the fee within 24 hours if you are a non-Thai national who has not graduated from an accredited educational institution located in Thailand. Check that your status changes from “Pending for Payment” to “Application Submitted.”
- Complete the remaining documents. Log in on a personal computer, open “My Application,” click “View,” then “Edit Application,” and upload your Statement of Purpose and English score before the interview day. For letters, follow the method you chose: offline uploads must be done before the application deadline, while online referees may submit afterward, as long as the letter arrives before the interview day.
- Watch for 22 February 2027. That is when VISTEC notifies shortlisted applicants for the 27 February interview and written examination.
VISTEC’s Terms and Conditions ask applicants to read the FAQ before contacting support. For questions it does not answer, email [email protected] or call +66 33 014 116-8.
What makes an application stronger
VISTEC’s FAQ says “Evaluation is based on academic performance, research potential, recommendation letters, English proficiency, and interview results.” Practical ways to show each:
- Research potential: a Statement of Purpose built around one school’s research areas, with a clear question you want to work on, beats a general wish to study abroad. The FAQ asks applicants to “carefully review the program details and faculty expertise.”
- Recommendation letters: referees who know your lab, project, or thesis work, and who actually receive and act on the system email. If a letter is missing, the FAQ asks applicants to check the referee’s email address and ask the referee to look in their spam or junk folder.
- English proficiency: an official score uploaded early, not on the eve of the interview.
- Interview and written examination: be ready to explain your own projects and the research you proposed. VISTEC does not publish what the written examination covers.
Decisions are final. VISTEC says there is no appeal, no re-evaluation, and no individual feedback, and that non-selection “may be due to academic cut-offs or the overall strength of the applicant pool.”
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating “up to THB 5 million” or “up to THB 20K” as guaranteed cash.
- Missing the 24-hour application-fee payment window, or the 23:59 Thai time payment cut-off on 15 February 2027.
- Assuming airfare, health insurance, visa costs, settling-in expenses, or all accommodation fees are covered when the official pages do not say so.
- Not submitting an official English test result recognized by VISTEC before the interview date.
- Choosing the offline recommendation-letter option but not uploading the letters before the application deadline.
- Applying to two programs without a clear top preference.
- Confusing a school’s name with its degree title, or relying on curriculum documents not yet confirmed for 2027.
- Reusing dates from the 2026 admission cycle as if they applied to 2027.
- Submitting false documents or a false fee-waiver claim, which leads to rejection and a permanent blacklist.
Frequently asked questions
Does the VISTEC full scholarship cover all my costs?
It covers what VISTEC lists: university fees, a monthly stipend of THB 15,000 to 20,000, on-campus housing, research and equipment budgets, and conference funding, plus research abroad for Ph.D. students. Utilities are your cost, other dormitory fees are unclear, and airfare, insurance, and visa costs are not stated.
Do I need to apply separately for the VISTEC scholarship?
No. VISTEC gives a full scholarship to every admitted M.Eng. and Ph.D. student. Your admission application is your scholarship application.
How much is the monthly stipend?
THB 15,000 to 20,000 per month; the Admission System describes it as “up to THB 20K.” VISTEC does not say what decides where your stipend falls in that range.
Is the VISTEC scholarship only for international students?
No. VISTEC welcomes both Thai and international applicants. Non-Thai nationals pay the USD 20 application fee unless they have graduated from an accredited educational institution located in Thailand.
Is there an application fee?
Yes, for non-Thai nationals: USD 20 (or the equivalent in Thai Baht) per application, paid within 24 hours of submission. The fee is automatically waived for any applicant, regardless of nationality, who has graduated from an accredited educational institution located in Thailand. Fees that are paid are non-refundable.
Does VISTEC pay for my flight, health insurance, or visa?
VISTEC’s pages do not say. Email [email protected] before you assume any of these is covered.
Is accommodation free?
Not fully. Water and electricity are always the student’s cost. One official page says dormitories are covered except utilities, while another says students pay accommodation and common area fees, so confirm with the admission team.
Can I apply in my final year of university?
Yes. Final-year bachelor’s students may apply for the M.Eng. or Ph.D., and final-year master’s students may apply for the Ph.D. VISTEC has not published the 2027 date for proof of degree completion.
Can I apply for a Ph.D. with only a bachelor’s degree?
Yes. Ph.D. qualifications include a completed or completing bachelor’s degree, and there are 5-year Ph.D. tracks. The admissions committee decides your final track at the interview.
Can I apply if my degree is not in science or engineering?
Yes, according to the FAQ, but you need strong academic grounding in science, engineering, or a related field and a convincing research case in your Statement of Purpose and interview. Coursework-based tracks are designed for applicants from non-related fields.
Which English test do I need, and is there a minimum score?
An official TOEFL, IELTS, or CU-TEP result recognized by VISTEC, submitted before the interview date. No minimum score is published.
What is the deadline, and in which time zone?
15 February 2027. The only hour VISTEC gives is for paying the fee on that day: by 23:59 Thai time (UTC+7). No separate cut-off hour for submitting the form is stated.
Is there a second admission round?
Not that VISTEC has announced. The official pages show one admission period, 1 October 2026 to 15 February 2027, with one interview date.
Is the interview online or on campus?
VISTEC does not say. Shortlisted applicants are notified on 22 February 2027 for the interview and written examination on 27 February 2027.
Is there a service bond after graduation?
No. VISTEC’s FAQ says “There is no mandatory service requirement,” and its main site says support is provided “without any bond or obligation after graduation.”
