Who this programme is actually for

This award fits applicants who already have a credible doctoral plan in Germany and can show serious contact with a host. It is not a general "study in Germany" stipend for people still shopping for a topic. Selection weighs academic achievement, the quality and feasibility of the research project, and the applicant's potential. Applicants in human medicine, veterinary medicine, and dentistry must use DAAD's additional information for medicine fields (www.daad.de/extrainfo). Individual doctoral project or structured doctoral study programme
The programme funds a doctoral project in Germany in either of two forms:
- An individual project supervised by a university teacher (doctoral supervisor)
- Participation in a structured doctoral study programme
Research phases outside Germany can also be funded if they are critical for completing the doctorate. Those visits should constitute no more than one quarter of the anticipated total funding period, and you must describe them in your study plan and time schedule.
Individual path: supervisor confirmation and agreed schedule
For an individual project you upload a schedule for planned research work that must be agreed with your academic supervisor, plus a letter confirming supervision by the doctoral supervisor (uploaded under acceptance of host institution). The research proposal itself should be discussed with the academic adviser. That means the host relationship is part of a competitive file, not something you invent after a deadline.
Structured path: module plan, coordinator contacts, admission
For a structured doctoral study programme you upload a module plan (under schedule), proof of existing contacts to the coordinator of the doctoral programme (under acceptance of host institution), and a letter of admission to a study programme. Admission may be submitted later if it is not available at application time.
Decision tip (interpretive): Choose the path that matches how your doctorate will actually be organised. Do not pick "structured" only because it sounds safer if you already have a named supervisor for an individual project, and do not claim an individual supervision letter if you are joining a structured programme that expects coordinator contact and a module plan.
What the published package pays (and what the page does not promise)
According to the official Value section, selected doctoral scholars can receive:
- Monthly payments of 1,400 euros
- Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover
- Travel allowance (upon application only)
- Annual research allowance of 460 euros
Under certain circumstances, after funding starts, you can apply for additional benefits:

- Monthly allowance for accompanying family members (section F, point 3)
- In case of a disability or chronic illness: on application, a subsidy may be provided for justified additional costs incurred abroad that are necessary to realise the project in Germany and that are not covered by a third party; whether and to what extent a subsidy will be paid is reviewed individually (section F, point 8)
DAAD also offers language-related support after an award (see the language section below). Benefits from third parties are partially credited towards the DAAD scholarship (section F, point 6).
Honest framing: The published package is a doctoral stipend plus payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance, a research allowance, and a travel allowance upon application, with optional add-ons under stated rules. The programme page does not publish a full living-cost budget for Germany and does not list tuition as a line item on this Value section. Do not treat "fully funded" as a promise that every rent, food, or family cost is covered unless that specific benefit is listed and approved under DAAD rules.
How long funding lasts (and the current-cycle start rule)
- Funding is provided for a maximum of four years. The selection committee decides the length based on your project and study plan.
- Grants are initially awarded for a maximum of three years. Academic achievements are assessed once a year. If progress shows you will successfully complete your doctorate within a reasonable period, the scholarship continues as planned. You can apply for an extension for a possible fourth year.

Treat 2027 as the funding-start rule for this cycle, not as proof that the product is a one-off "2027 scholarship." The programme is a standing DAAD doctoral award whose cycle dates refresh.
Eligibility rules that quietly end applications
These rules sit on the official Requirements tab and regularly stop otherwise strong applicants:
- Degree age: As a rule, most recent university degree no more than six years before the application deadline.
- Doctorate already started: Start of the doctorate not longer than three years ago at application time.
- Germany residency: Not resident in Germany for longer than 15 months at the application deadline.
- Degree by funding start: Master's or Diplom completed by the time funding begins (exceptional cases: Bachelor's).
- Country and status filter: After you set status and country on the official database, this listing may not appear for that combination. If it does not appear, do not treat this article as proof you can apply.

The country-deadline trap (the section most clones get wrong)
DAAD updates application deadlines annually in the second quarter. In most cases they fall in a similar period to the previous year. You find the current dates on the official programme page after selecting your status and country.
Applications for this scholarship programme are possible between 1 June and the stated application deadline for your track. The DAAD portal closes at 24:00 hrs Central European Time (CET) or Central European Summer Time (CEST) on the last application day. Incomplete applications cannot be considered. After the deadline expires, the portal for this programme is not available until the next application period.
What goes wrong in practice:
- Copying a deadline from another nationality or from an aggregator summary
- Assuming one worldwide "DAAD PhD deadline"
- Sending the file on the final evening and hitting a technical problem (DAAD warns against that)

How DAAD says it selects
An independent selection committee of specialist scientists reviews applications. The published criteria are:
- Qualification: Academic achievements (grade point average, development of grades), academic progress, knowledge of the language(s) of instruction or working language(s), and scholarly achievements after graduation where applicable (for example publications, lectures, conference papers).
- Quality of research project: Quality of research proposal and preparation (originality, topicality and relevance, choice of host institution and first contacts), feasibility and consistency of study plan and schedule, and incorporation of the project within the overall doctorate when relevant.
- Potential of applicant: Career prospects, motivation (academic and personal reasons for wanting to visit Germany, German language skills if different from the working language), and non-study-related knowledge, skills, and civic engagement.

What you upload (map each file to a decision)
After registering on the DAAD portal, complete the online application and upload the listed attachments as Portable Document Format (PDF) files. Documents in a national language need German or English translations. DAAD may request certified copies later.
Documents listed on the programme page include:
- Full curriculum vitae in tabular form (max. 3 pages)
- List of publications (max. 10 pages), if applicable
- Letter of motivation (1-2 pages) answering what you hope to gain from the project in Germany personally, professionally, and for your career (upload under study project/motivation)
- A proposal prepared and formulated by yourself, plus a description of previous research work (max. 10 pages in total), discussed with the academic adviser (upload under research project)
- Path-specific host and schedule files (supervisor confirmation and agreed schedule, or module plan, programme contacts, and admission)
- Declaration from the scientific supervisor in Germany on safety-relevant and ethical aspects of the research project (upload under Scientific ethics/research safety)
- All university degree certificates already obtained, stating final grades (provisional document if the most recent certificate is not yet available; final certificate before scholarship start)
- Transcripts of records for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
- One recent supporting letter of recommendation from a university teacher (generate the DAAD recommendation form in the portal as a writable PDF under Create Letter of Recommendation Form; it can only be generated during the open application period)
- Optional supporting documents (employment certificates, internships, voluntary commitment, and similar)
Your application is only valid if all required documents reach the DAAD portal by the deadline for your country.
Language support after an award (not a pre-filter)
To help improve language skills for the stay in Germany, DAAD offers:
- Payment of course fees for an online language course after receipt of the Scholarship Award Letter
- If necessary: a language course (2, 4 or 6 months) before the start of the research stay in Germany; DAAD decides whether to fund participation and for how long depending on language skills and project. If a language course scholarship is granted and the working language at the host institute is German, participation is compulsory.
- Allowance for a personally chosen German language course during the grant period
- Reimbursement of the fee for a TestDaF or DSH test, which you can take in your home country after the Scholarship Award Letter or in Germany during the funding period
Selection still asks about knowledge of the instruction or working language(s). Language support after an award is not a reason to ignore the language needs of your host institute.
A realistic preparation sequence
- Open the official Doctoral Programmes in Germany database entry and select your status and country. Confirm that you can apply and note your deadline.
- Decide individual versus structured path and secure the matching host evidence early (supervisor letter and schedule, or coordinator contacts and module plan).
- Check degree-age, doctorate-start, and Germany residency clocks against your real dates.
- When the application period is open (from 1 June until your deadline), register in the DAAD portal.
- Generate the recommendation form in the portal, send it to your university teacher, and upload the completed letter.
