If you already have the Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program pages open, this explainer is still useful. It explains the programme's non-academic practitioner focus, the four-month New Haven residence requirement, what the published compensation package does and does not list, and the nomination myth before you submit the application fee or ask three people for letters.
Derrick Ochieng for Scholarship Tally checked the official Yale World Fellows site, the application information content on that site, the online application portal, and the nominate a candidate for 2027 page on 2 October 2026. We are not the World Fellows office. Re-check the live official pages before you submit, because deadlines and process details can change.
What this page will and will not decide for you
This page helps you check whether the 2027 cycle of the Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program at Yale University’s International Leadership Center (Jackson School of Global Affairs) fits your eligibility, career stage, availability, and application plans before you submit the $20 application fee and request three recommendation letters. It is a four-month, full-time residential leadership fellowship from mid-August to mid-December 2027. It is not a Yale degree.
It will not invent a stipend dollar amount, a 2027 cohort size, or an acceptance rate. Yale does not publish those figures on the pages we checked. It will not tell you that you are competitive. The programme says it cannot pre-screen applicants.
What the Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program actually is
World Fellows is Yale’s flagship residential programme for extraordinary leaders from across the globe. Fellows spend four months in New Haven growing intellectually, sharing knowledge, strengthening skills, and expanding networks. The programme was established in 2002 and now reports a network of over 450 World Fellows contributing to their communities in more than 100 countries.
Weekly structure on the official site includes Good Society seminars (Fellows present their vision and work to each other) and Salon sessions with distinguished guests. Fellows also receive coaching and skills training, may audit many of the 2,000-plus courses offered at Yale, host talks and panels, mentor Yale student liaisons, and build networks across the cohort and alumni community.
Admission is highly competitive. Yale says it receives thousands of applications for an extremely limited number of fellowships, and that each cohort is geographically balanced and represents a wide range of professions, talents, experience, cultures, people, and perspectives.
Stop here if you are a full-time student or a full-time academic
This is one of the clearest stop rules on the official site. The fellowship does not accept full-time students or full-time academics. It is designed for non-academic practitioners. If your primary occupation is student or scholar and you want time at Yale, the site points you to the academic department that matches your research interests instead.
If you are hunting for a master’s, PhD, or any degree-granting Yale scholarship, stop using this page as a substitute. World Fellows is not that path.
Citizenship, dual United States citizens, and the outside-the-United-States preference
Applicants must be citizens of a country other than the United States. Dual citizens with the United States are eligible, but Yale states a strong preference for candidates whose work is focused outside the United States. If your impact story is mainly United States-domestic, treat that preference as a real selection signal, not a footnote.
English fluency is required. Fellows must read complex academic texts, present to large and small audiences, and build professional relationships in English. The programme does not require Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores. English is assessed at interview if you reach the final stages.
Career stage, age, and what “on the rise” does not guarantee
Yale asks for applicants between five and twenty-five years into their professional careers, with demonstrated and significant accomplishments at a regional, national, or international level. The average age of a World Fellow is 39. There is no minimum or maximum age limit. The youngest applicant ever accepted, on the official FAQ, was 27.
Selection criteria on the site include an established record of extraordinary achievement and integrity; commitment to the good society and positive impact; promise of future leadership and notable global impact; critical, creative, entrepreneurial, and strategic thinking; likelihood to benefit from the programme and contribute a global perspective on campus; and commitment to the full residential schedule, mentoring students, and speaking frequently on campus.
The phrase “on the rise” does not replace evidence of impact. Applicants should use their professional record and measurable accomplishments to show how they meet the programme’s stated selection criteria. Looking at past Fellow biographies is the programme’s own suggested reality check. Asking the office whether you are competitive is not useful. They say they cannot pre-screen and do not provide individual feedback.
Residence and time: mid-August to mid-December is not a visit
World Fellows must be in residence at Yale University in New Haven for the entire programme, from mid-August through mid-December. The site describes a full-time commitment: daytime seminars, skills sessions, and classes; evenings with presentations, dinners, student meetings, and networking; and possible multi-day travel during the fellowship.
Families may accompany Fellows. The programme says it can provide information on schools and childcare, housing suited to family needs, and immigration support for eligible family members. That is not a promise that family logistics are easy, or that evening and travel demands disappear.
If your employment, care responsibilities, or other commitments prevent you from living in New Haven for the full programme period, the full-time residence requirement may make the 2027 cycle impractical for you.
What the package covers, and the stipend amount Yale does not publish
World Fellows do not pay tuition or fees of any kind to Yale University. The published compensation package includes:
- A taxable stipend to cover the costs of living in New Haven
- A modest, furnished, one or two-bedroom apartment for the duration of the programme
- Medical insurance
- Round-trip travel from the home country
Yale does not publish a dollar amount for the stipend on the pages we checked. Aggregator pages that invent one are not official. Do not plan a household budget from a third-party figure.
Yale's official pages do not state a specific stipend dollar amount or promise that the compensation package will cover every household or family expense. Use the published package as the basis for planning, and contact the programme if you need clarification about an expense that is not specifically listed.
How this differs from Yale degree funding
World Fellows is not admission to Yale University. It does not award an academic diploma. It is not a master’s or PhD programme. Fellows do not receive academic credit or a transcript.
A separate FAQ answer is blunt: the programme does not offer financial aid or scholarships to students who wish to enroll in a degree-granting programme at Yale. Those questions belong with the Yale school you would apply to. Do not treat World Fellows as a back door into funded graduate study.
Nomination is optional and does not improve your chances of selection
You do not need a nomination to apply. Yale says it gives no preference to nominated candidates, and that a candidate does not need to be nominated in order to apply. Self-nominations are not accepted. Multiple nominations of the same person do not increase the chance of acceptance.
Nominators help the programme find candidates who may not know about World Fellows. Anyone can nominate. A nominator may also serve as one of your three recommenders, but a nomination letter is not automatically a recommendation letter. The recommender must still submit through the application system.
The $20 file: curriculum vitae, 600 words, three letters, one in-platform video
Applications are entirely online. There is a $20 application fee. Before the deadline you can work on the file and submit when ready.
Required materials:
- Résumé or curriculum vitae, maximum 3 pages
- Personal statement, maximum 600 words
- Three letters of recommendation
- A brief video statement recorded inside the application platform
- The $20 fee
Applications for the 2027 programme are open. The official Yale page currently states that applications close on Wednesday, 2 December at 14:00 PM Eastern Time. The page does not display the calendar year beside the deadline. Because the page identifies this as the 2027 application cycle, the deadline corresponds to 2 December 2026 for applicants planning for the 2027 programme. Confirm the live application page before submitting.
Final decisions go to all applicants by email by the end of April. The programme will not release individual status earlier.
Video and letter failure modes
Video. Videos must be recorded in the application platform. You cannot upload a file filmed elsewhere or paste a link from another host. Use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox on a computer. You get one re-record after the first attempt. After the second recording, you cannot delete or replace the video. Technical issues, Yale says, will not adversely affect the application, but that is not a license to ignore the browser requirement.
Letters. Exactly three letters are accepted, and Yale says they should be submitted by the application deadline. Letters are confidential. The current official page contains two different answers about late letters: one says late letters will be accepted through Monday, August 3, while another says they will be accepted for up to one week after the application deadline but may not be reviewed with the rest of the application. Because those instructions are inconsistent, applicants should plan for all three letters to be received by the application deadline rather than relying on a late-submission provision.
Letters must be in English. Recommenders may write in another language and use a translation tool. Family members may serve as recommenders, but Yale notes that references should be people with whom you have interacted on a professional basis and who can evaluate your career progression and potential. If technical issues persist, the recommender may email the letter to [email protected] and include the applicant's email address. That is a fallback, not a second normal route. Letters should still be submitted through the application link.
After you submit: April decisions, no feedback, reapplying
If you are not selected, individual feedback is not available. Previous applicants may apply again with a fully new file: new curriculum vitae, new letters, and a new personal statement. Materials cannot be transferred from a prior year. Highlight additional achievements since the last attempt.

Frequently asked questions
Does Yale World Fellows fund a Yale degree?
No. The World Fellows Program is a four-month residential fellowship, not admission to a Yale degree programme. Yale says it does not offer financial aid or scholarships to students who wish to enroll in a degree-granting programme at Yale. World Fellows receive the programme's stated compensation package, which includes a taxable stipend, housing, medical insurance, and round-trip travel from the home country.
How much is the stipend?
Yale’s World Fellows pages describe a taxable stipend to cover living costs in New Haven. They do not publish a dollar amount on the pages we checked on 2 October 2026. Do not rely on third-party figures.
What is the 2027 application deadline?
The official Yale page currently states that applications close on Wednesday, 2 December at 14:00 PM Eastern Time. The page does not display the calendar year beside the deadline. Because the page identifies this as the 2027 application cycle, the deadline corresponds to 2 December 2026 for applicants planning for the 2027 programme. Confirm the live application page before submitting.
Do I need to be nominated?
No. Nomination is optional and does not improve odds. Do not nominate yourself.
Can full-time students or professors apply?
No. The programme does not accept full-time students or full-time academics.
Are United States citizens eligible?
Applicants must be citizens of a country other than the United States. Dual United States citizens are eligible, with a strong preference for work focused outside the United States.

No minimum or maximum age. The programme is aimed at people roughly five to twenty-five years into their careers. Average age is 39; youngest accepted was 27.
Can I bring my family?
Yes, that is a personal decision. The programme can advise on schools, childcare, housing, and immigration for eligible family members. The schedule remains intensive.
What if my video recording goes wrong?
You may re-record once in the platform. After that, the video cannot be deleted or replaced. Use Chrome or Firefox on a computer.
When will I hear back?
By the end of April, by email. No earlier individual status updates. No feedback if refused.
I applied before. Can I reuse last year’s materials?
No. Submit a new application with updated materials.
