- You are a University of Alberta Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Master of Science (MSc) Engineering student, or a UAlberta engineering graduate with about one or two years of experience. The department page does not open this to every Cambridge applicant worldwide.
- You can credibly start a Cambridge PhD in Fall 2027 – meaning a research match and a real Cambridge application, not only a scholarship email.
- You understand the committee’s published bar: excel at Cambridge and “project a positive image as an ambassador for Alberta.” That is not a participation award.
Fail any filter → use the department page and stop.
Do not mix this with the US Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarship.

What $64,000 is – and what the page does not claim
Printed on UAlberta: $64,000/year; normally renewed for a second and third year, subject to suitable progress.
Not printed on UAlberta (do not invent): whether that figure is Canadian dollars or US dollars (confirm with Olfert); that Cambridge composition fees, visa, National Health Service surcharge, or college fees are fully covered; “guaranteed” Churchill College membership without a Cambridge offer; a living-cost table for Cambridge.
Amount conflict to surface, not hide: the Society’s awards page still describes the same 1978 Edmonton award as “approximately $40,000 per year” (checked 20 September 2026). That is not a cue to average the two numbers. Application instructions live on the UAlberta department page ($64,000). Ask the committee which number is current. Still your problem unless another award lands: Cambridge PhD fees and UK living costs above whatever this stipend actually covers; visa; the gap if renewal is declined. UAlberta explicitly encourages topping it up with a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) graduate award, the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE) War Memorial Scholarship, or other awards – check those programmes on their own official pages; this post is not a full how-to for them.
Two clocks, not one
Clock A – Alberta PDF (hard date on the department page): 16 October 2026 for Fall 2027. Single PDF to Jason Olfert.
Clock B – Cambridge PhD: course and funding deadlines are course-specific on Cambridge’s Course Directory. University funding deadlines are not the same as the UAlberta scholarship email. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a different award with different passport rules. Do not invent a single Cambridge date. Open your course page and take the earlier of course deadline vs funding deadline. Cambridge deadlines: postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/apply/application-deadlines.
Working backwards (planning math, not an official UAlberta calendar): late summer 2026 – shortlist Cambridge labs and read supervisors’ recent papers; early autumn – two UAlberta referees agreed and transcript in hand; before 16 October 2026 – PDF sent; in parallel – Cambridge Applicant Portal work, because a scholarship committee cannot admit you to Cambridge.
The department page lists Cambridge Engineering divisions as context (fluids, electrical, mechanics and materials, geotech/structures, manufacturing, information engineering, plus Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology). That is a map of possible homes, not a guarantee that every division is recruiting for 2027.
The two-page letter – where the cycle turns
UAlberta asks for: reasons for wishing to study at Cambridge plus a brief description of your area of interest (two pages maximum), a UAlberta transcript, names of two references (preferably at UAlberta), optional resume. One PDF.
Unusable letter (editorial example): “Cambridge is a world-class university and Churchill College would be an honour. I have always wanted to study in the UK and represent Alberta.” No lab, no method, no reason this PhD exists.
Usable letter: which Cambridge group, which problem, what you already measured or built at UAlberta, why that group’s next experiment needs you, and one concrete sentence on the Alberta-ambassador test (what you would actually do, not a slogan).
References: the page asks for names, not uploaded letters. Do not attach two confidential PDFs unless Olfert says so. Jason Olfert is both the intake address and, on the Society’s public recipient list, the 2003 scholar. That is public record – the person who reads this file once held the award – not a ghostwritten memoir in his voice.
After a yes – obligations, not a victory lap
- Renewal for years 2 and 3 is normal, not automatic (“suitable progress”).
- You are entering a Cambridge PhD, with that university’s progress and thesis rules.
- Churchill College is a STEM-heavy graduate college; college life is not the Engineering Department.
- The committee’s ambassador line is part of why you were picked; it does not end at the email offer.
Mistakes that waste a cycle
- Applying to the US Foundation portal and thinking that is this award
- Emailing a dean’s generic inbox because an aggregator said [email protected] (live department page says [email protected])
- Treating the PDF as a Cambridge application
- A two-page letter with no lab and no Alberta-specific reason
- Ignoring the 1-2 year experience window and applying five years out as if it were open
- Calling $64,000 “USD full ride” because another site did
- Missing 16 October 2026 because you were watching Cambridge’s January course deadline instead
