The KAUST Global Fellowship Program is a three-year, on-site research fellowship at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. It is built for early-career researchers who already have (or are about to finish) a PhD and who can lead their own project inside KAUST’s published research missions. This page is a decision guide: who it fits, where strong applicants fail, what the package covers and does not cover, and how Call 2027 actually moves from Concept Note to invitation. It is not a substitute for the official guidelines. The dates, amounts, eligibility requirements, and application steps in this guide were checked against KAUST’s official Call 2027 materials and program pages on 24 September 2026. Interpretive advice is guidance for applicants, not an additional KAUST rule. If this post and the official site ever disagree, the official site wins.
What this fellowship is (and is not)
Official framing: the program supports emerging research leaders and fellow-led projects aligned with KAUST’s strategic research areas. Applicants propose and lead their own research, while a Host Principal Investigator (Host PI) provides the faculty support and research environment required for progression to the full-proposal stage.
The six research missions named on the program pages are Food, Water, Energy, Health, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the Red Sea (sometimes described as Marine Science / Red Sea exploration). Proposals must also map to a KAUST academic division: Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE); Biomedical Sciences (BioMed / BMS); Computer, Electrical, and Mathematical Science and Engineering (CEMSE); or Physical Science and Engineering (PSE).
Mode and term (Call 2027 guidelines): three years on site at KAUST, with a formal evaluation at the end of year two. Renewal beyond three years is not available under this program. Remote and part-time participation are not allowed.
This is not a funded PhD, not a remote fellowship, and not a promised faculty track after year three. If your real goal is any funded postdoc in the region, compare ordinary postdoc openings as well.
Who it fits / who should skip

Likely fit if most of these are true
- Your PhD was awarded after January 2023 inclusive, or it is not awarded yet but will be complete before the Fellowship starts.
- You can submit at least one first-author or joint-first-author peer-reviewed paper (a second is optional). Conference papers may be accepted depending on the field. Papers in preparation or only submitted, non-English papers, and conference presentation abstracts are not accepted.
- You have a three-year idea that is not a simple continuation of your PhD and not a clone of a Host PI’s running project.
- The idea clearly sits in one or more KAUST missions and a real faculty cluster you can name.
- You are willing to live and work full-time at KAUST and can meet the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia requirements for a resident permit (iqama).
- You want independence and access to KAUST facilities more than a conventional supervisor-owned postdoc.
Skip or wait if
- You are a KAUST alumnus (MSc or PhD). The Call 2027 guidelines state KAUST Alumni are not eligible.
- You are a KAUST-affiliated postdoc who will have been at KAUST for more than 12 months at the full-proposal deadline (15 January 2027). Incoming postdocs who apply before joining are generally treated as external; already-contracted incoming applicants must name only that contracted faculty member.
- Your PhD was awarded before January 2023 and you do not have a justified parental-leave or military/civil-service career break. The FAQ says no exceptions for other voluntary breaks.
- You cannot relocate, need to hire students or buy major equipment from the fellowship research budget, or your only first-author evidence is still unpublished.
Key eligibility and application gates
- PhD date and alumni status. Call 2027 applicants must have received the PhD after January 2023 inclusive (or finish before start). Alumni of KAUST MSc/PhD programs are out regardless of the idea’s quality.
- Host PI support after Stage 1. Stage 1 does not require a Host PI support letter. That is widely misread as “no PI needed.” You still name aligned faculty. Eligible Concept Notes are shared with named faculty. Only candidates with at least one faculty expression of interest are invited to submit a full proposal. Instructional faculty cannot host.
- Novelty and independence. The FAQ and guidelines require novelty beyond your PhD or current work, and say the idea must not simply replicate research already underway in the Host PI’s lab.
- Incomplete Stage 1 pack by 1 October 2026. Incomplete applications and email submissions are not considered. Stage 1 needs the Call 2027 Concept Note template, a CV of at most four pages with a full publication list, up to two selected publications, and two signed reference letters. Letters must cover relationship, research ability with examples, soft skills, independence potential, and feasibility. How to Apply also allows referees to submit letters by email to [email protected] by 1 October.
- Mission, division, and faculty fit. The proposal must align with at least one KAUST strategic research area and an academic division. At the faculty-review stage, eligible applications are shared with faculty, and only candidates for whom at least one faculty member confirms hosting interest are invited to the full-proposal stage.
- Budget that assumes disallowed costs. Research budget may cover conferences, work-related travel, Core Labs use, consumables, and other approved categories. Big equipment and hiring of students or research staff are not eligible.
- One proposal per cycle. You may reapply once later if still eligible. Avoid using your one proposal this cycle on a half-ready note.

Covers (official)
- Annual stipend of US$75,000 (US$6,250 per month).
- Medical insurance.
- Housing depending on family status (FAQ also describes free on-campus housing as part of the package).
- Schooling for up to three children aged 4+; daycare subsidy for younger children.
- Relocation and travel allowance: flat-rate relocation of US$3,000 (or standard university rates) for the Fellow and family where applicable, including visa costs and shipping of personal belongings; flight tickets booked separately by the University. This relocation allowance does not apply to KAUST-affiliated applicants. Fellows and eligible dependents (up to two children) also receive annual travel assistance per university policy.
- Field-dependent annual research budget: up to US$20,000 for computational sciences (CEMSE); up to US$30,000 for experimental/physical sciences (PSE); up to US$40,000 for biological/life sciences (BESE); up to US$40,000 for biomedical sciences (BMS). The Fellowship page summarises research funding as “up to $40,000”; the guidelines break the ceiling down by division. Use the guidelines when you write a budget.
- Mentoring, leadership, and teaching programmes available to KAUST postdocs (including programmes named on the Fellowship page such as mentoring and the Harvard HE Teaching Certificate).
Does not cover (official)
- Big equipment purchases under the Fellowship research budget.
- Hiring students or research staff under that budget.
- Remote or part-time work while holding another primary job (FAQ: full-time at KAUST only; if selected you must work full-time on the fellowship project without commitments to other institutions or funding agencies).
Official pages do not brand the award with the marketing phrase “fully funded.” Describe the stipend, research budget, housing, insurance, schooling, and relocation/travel items as published, not as an invented all-in label.
Call 2027 process, in order

Official pages sometimes say “two-stage.” The Call 2027 guidelines describe Concept Note submission, faculty review and expression of interest, then invited full proposal. Use this order when planning your calendar.
- 1 September to 1 October 2026 – Stage 1 Concept Note. Submit through the online application process linked from the program site (Call 2027 Concept Note form). Pack: Concept Note on the Call 2027 template (guidelines: up to three pages; trust the live template if it differs), CV max four pages with full publication list, up to two selected publications, two signed reference letters, and names of potential Host PIs. No Host PI letter is required at this stage.
- October to November 2026 – Faculty review. Eligible notes are shared with named faculty. Faculty may review profiles, hold informal interviews, and indicate hosting interest. Only applicants with confirmed faculty interest are invited forward.
- Invitation in November 2026; full proposals accepted 15 November 2026 to 15 January 2027 (How to Apply); deadline 15 January 2027 (guidelines). Invited applicants submit a full proposal on the Call 2027 template. Incomplete or late packs are not eligible. After a Stage 3 full proposal is submitted, no further changes can be made.
- Later selection steps (guidelines). Internal divisional review, external review for the highest-scoring applications, then interview for shortlisted candidates. The Vice President for Research makes the final nomination. Feedback is limited: detailed feedback is only for nominated candidates; external-review candidates may receive some feedback; volume limits individualised comments for everyone else.
Nominated Fellows start after they obtain a resident visa and complete KAUST onboarding.
Host PI count inconsistency to resolve before submission: the current How to Apply page says applicants must identify up to two KAUST faculty members at Stage 1, while the Call 2027 Application Guidelines say applicants may indicate at least one and up to three. Because the official sources currently differ, check the live application form and the latest Call 2027 guidelines immediately before submitting and follow the requirement presented there.
Host PI reality check
Naming faculty is not a courtesy field. The program shares your Concept Note with the people you list. Support is what unlocks the full proposal.
Use the KAUST faculty directory to find researchers whose published agenda makes your idea complementary, not redundant. If you have already secured a host, are already affiliated with KAUST, or are joining under a contract, name only that one faculty member. Each PI may support a maximum of one KAUST-affiliated candidate per call. Instructional faculty cannot host.
Fit test before you open the form: can you name one to three faculty whose labs make your idea stronger, without turning your Concept Note into a work package from their existing grant?
What “fellow-led” and “novel” have to mean
Selection looks at scientific excellence of the applicant, research project merit (quality, novelty, significance, relevance to KAUST missions, feasibility, budget practicality, impact potential), and Host PI suitability. The guidelines encourage ideas that go beyond continuing PhD research and that bring new expertise aligned with KAUST and Kingdom priorities.
If your Concept Note mainly continues your PhD research or closely replicates research already underway in the Host PI’s lab, it may not meet the program’s stated expectations for novelty and independence.
Myths to drop before you write
- “I need a Host PI letter on day one.” Not for Stage 1. You still need faculty who will later support you.
- “Everyone gets a US$45,000 research budget.” That figure appears on some aggregator pages and is not the official Call 2027 schedule. Official ceilings are US$20,000 / US$30,000 / US$40,000 by division.
- “It is a remote fellowship.” Official FAQ: no. Live and work at KAUST full-time.
- “KAUST alumni are welcome.” Official guidelines: not eligible.
- “I can hire a student or buy a major instrument from the research budget.” Official guidelines: not eligible under this Fellowship.
- “I can email the Concept Note.” Incomplete applications and email submissions are not considered.
FAQ
What is the PhD date cut for Call 2027?
PhD awarded after January 2023 inclusive. Pending PhD is allowed if completed before the Fellowship starts.
Do career breaks extend the four-year window?
The FAQ says well-justified parental leave or military/civil service may be considered. Other voluntary breaks do not get exceptions. Confirm on the live FAQ before you rely on an exception.
Can every nationality apply?
Yes. Nominees must still meet Saudi Arabia residency and work-permit requirements.
Can KAUST alumni apply?
No (MSc or PhD alumni), per the Call 2027 guidelines.
Do I need a confirmed Host PI to submit Stage 1?
No letter is required at Stage 1, but you must identify potential Host PIs. Faculty support is required to be invited to the full proposal.
How many Host PIs may I name?

Can my project continue my PhD or the host lab’s current work?
No. It must show novelty beyond your PhD or current work and must not simply replicate research already underway in the Host PI’s lab.

Decision: apply this call, wait, or skip this cycle
Apply this call if your PhD date works, you are not blocked by the alumni or affiliation rules, you can name real Host PIs, the idea is new versus your thesis and versus their labs, you will move to KAUST, and your Stage 1 pack can be complete by 1 October 2026.
Wait if the PhD will miss the start date, your only first-author evidence is still unpublished, your Host PI map is still generic, or you are applying only because the stipend number is large.
Consider waiting or not applying this cycle if the alumni or affiliation ban applies, you need staff lines or a major instrument from this budget, you will not live at KAUST, or the project only exists to “get a KAUST affiliation.”
