GIST graduate funding for international students: what is automatic, what is gated, and what can cancel the offer

The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) graduate scholarship is not a separate contest. Official FAQ language: international graduate students receive the GIST scholarship automatically with admission, with no second contest form. What this guide adds beyond the official handbook: a fit test before you pay the fee, a clear split between automatic tuition support and gated allowances, the failure modes that waste an application or revoke an offer, and a Spring-first process order with Fall 2027 as a secondary window. It is not a substitute for the live GIST admissions site.

Fit test: is GIST funding even relevant to you?

Answer these honestly before you open the portal. If several answers are no, do not force a Spring 2027 file.

1. Are you applying for funded graduate admission through the official portal? Funding follows international graduate admission under the published package.
2. Can you meet the enrollment deadline and degree-document rules? Spring 2027 enrollment closes 4 January 2027 (schedule page). If you expect to graduate, GIST accepts a certificate of expected graduation or official university letter that includes your name, the degree to be conferred, and the date of degree conferment; final official degree and transcript documents are still due under the apostille / consular rules after enrollment.
3. Can you meet English minimums (or a published exemption / conditional path)? Minimums: TOEFL iBT 80, TOEFL PBT 550, IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEIC 750, or NEW TEPS 285. Scores must be taken within two years before the online application deadline.
4. Can you finish the online application, pay the designated application fee, and get two Google Forms recommendation letters in before 7 October 2026, 17:00 KST? Recommendation links go to referees only after the fee is paid.
5. Can you accept a one-time matriculation fee of 680,000 won (non-refundable) plus dorm/apartment fees and separate utilities? GIST publishes exemption and financial-difficulty waiver routes for that fee (details under What this funding is). Tuition is fully supported. Living costs are not a blank cheque.

If those checks pass for a listed Master of Science (M.S.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), or integrated M.S./Ph.D. department, continue. If not, wait for a later intake or choose another pathway rather than burning fee money and referee time.

What this funding is, and what it is not

What it is: GIST does not require a separate scholarship application for international graduate students. The scholarship is granted with international graduate admission, while some individual benefits have their own conditions or participation requirements. Official FAQ confirms the automatic grant. Tuition fees are fully waived, and there are monthly allowances, research assistantship, health insurance, and flight reimbursement (one-way flight to Korea). A one-time matriculation fee of 680,000 won is charged to newly admitted students who enroll. GIST states that some students may be exempt from the 680,000 won matriculation fee. Its application procedure also provides a waiver route for applicants with financial difficulties, subject to GIST’s review. Official stipend rows list M.S. and Ph.D. amounts; integrated M.S./Ph.D. students should confirm with the department rather than assume a third rate.

Housing fees (as of 2022)

From the official scholarships page. Notes on that page: waiting may take longer than expected; housing fees increase every year; utility fees are charged separately; additional costs may occur for wallpapering or flooring.

Degree options are full-time M.S., Ph.D., and integrated M.S./Ph.D. Typical timelines on the degree-programs page: about two years for M.S. and four for Ph.D.; maximum completion times three / seven / eight years respectively. Departments include Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical and Robotics Engineering, Environment and Energy Engineering, Life Sciences, Physics and Photon Science, Chemistry, Biomedical Science and Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Semiconductor Engineering, AI Policy and Strategy, Integrative Neuroscience and Physiology, and Mathematical Sciences (M.S. only).

What it is not:

• Not a promise that every monthly allowance pays every semester with no credit or GPA gate.
• Not a guarantee that your research assistantship will match the 2022 averages.
• Not free or instant housing (waiting lists, deposits, utilities, and yearly fee increases are published).
• Not a published total “yearly package” figure you can treat as cash-in-hand.
• Not an invitation to invent an application-fee amount; GIST requires the designated application fee, and unpaid applications are not processed.

Hard traps and failure modes

These are the places applications and offers die. Check each before you pay.

1. Treating an aggregator page as the apply link. Use GIST’s own portal and guide pages. Aggregator mirrors go stale and often mis-sell this as a standalone scholarship contest.
2. Missing 7 October 2026, 17:00 KST. That is Korea Standard Time, not “end of day” in your city. Late submissions are not allowed.
3. Skipping the designated application fee. Official FAQ: the fee is mandatory; your online application is not processed or considered valid until payment is completed. Recommendation Google Forms links also go out only after the fee is paid (Application Procedure).
4. Treating 2022 research-assistantship averages as your personal guarantee. Research assistantship: GIST publishes averages as of 2022, not a guaranteed individual amount, for students participating in research projects. Do not budget as if the average is a contract.
5. Ignoring post-enrollment gates. Student and meal allowances need at least 9 credits in the previous semester. The international student allowance needs GPA 3.0 / 4.5 in the previous semester. GIST frames both against the previous semester and publishes no first-term exception; do not guess when payment begins.
6. Assuming dorm space is immediate and cheap forever. Housing: The published housing table is as of 2022. GIST says housing fees increase every year and utilities are separate; waiting may take longer than expected, and extras (wallpaper/flooring) may occur. Use the full as-of-2022 housing table above when budgeting.
7. Fighting the online system on an unsupported setup. GIST says the online application is optimized for Windows and asks you to use a Windows-based computer. System problems: email [email protected] with a screen capture. Email or post applications are not accepted.
8. Leaving apostille / consular verification too late. Certified academic documents with apostille (or Korean embassy certificate) are preferred. Two document deadlines matter after admission: GIST’s procedure page requires original degree and transcript documents that are apostilled or authenticated by a Korean Embassy to be sent by post within 10 days after enrollment. GIST’s required-documents page separately states that admission will be canceled if the required apostilled or consular-confirmed academic certificates have not been submitted by the end of the enrollment month. Follow both requirements and the latest instructions GIST gives successful applicants. Separately, if enrollment documents do not arrive or the matriculation fee is not paid by the enrollment deadline, the admission offer is revoked (Application Procedure).

Related English trap: conditional admission for missing official English scores requires a school certificate that the medium of instruction was English, then an official score that meets GIST minima within 6 months of admission (FAQ / Required Documents). Fail that, and GIST states you are automatically removed from the school register.

How the process actually runs

Order matters. Do not chase recommendation letters before the fee is paid, and do not treat result day as the end of document work.

1. Submit the online application and pay the designated application fee through the official portal (Spring 2027 foreign applicant link). Use a Windows-based computer as recommended.
2. Upload required documents and obtain two recommendation letters via Google Forms from the referees you register. Letters are electronic only; the Google Forms link can be sent only after the fee is paid (FAQ / Application Procedure). Documents must be in English or Korean (or translated by the issuing institution or a public notary).
3. Watch your email. Admissions or the department may contact you for notification or an interview if needed.
4. Receive the admission result by email at the address registered in the online system. Successful candidates must respond by the date GIST provides.
5. Enroll: submit enrollment documents by post and pay the matriculation fee by the enrollment deadline, or the offer is revoked (Application Procedure). Spring 2027 enrollment deadline: 4 January 2027 (Admission Schedule).
6. Submit verified academic certificates after enrollment. Two document deadlines matter: the procedure page requires original degree and transcript documents that are apostilled or authenticated by a Korean Embassy to be sent by post within 10 days after enrollment; the required-documents page separately states that admission will be canceled if the required apostilled or consular-confirmed academic certificates have not been submitted by the end of the enrollment month. Follow both clocks and the latest instructions GIST gives successful applicants (same dual-deadline trap as Hard traps). China graduates use CSSD verification. Verified documents submitted to GIST are not returned.
7. Apply for a student visa with the Certificate of Admission and embassy process. Some Embassies of the Republic of Korea may ask for an official English test score.

Spring 2027 schedule (primary)

GIST notes these dates are subject to change without prior notice. Re-check the official schedule before you rely on a printed date.

Fall 2027 schedule (secondary)

Same document-exam and review durations (about 15 and 30 days) appear on the schedule page for Fall.

How to apply carefully

• Apply only through the official GIST online application system. Do not email or post an application package as a substitute.
• Pay the designated application fee early enough that both referees can finish Google Forms before the KST deadline.
• Register referees who know your academic or professional work (faculty or supervisors). GIST graduates applying for a Ph.D. with the same advisor have a published alternate confirmation-certificate path.
• Keep English scores inside the two-year window before the deadline. IELTS 5.5 is not enough; the published Academic IELTS minimum is 6.5.
• If you expect to graduate, use a certificate of expected graduation or official letter that states your full name, the degree to be conferred, and the exact conferment date. Missing any of those, GIST will not accept it as a valid replacement. Final official degree and transcript documents are still required under the apostille / consular rules.
• Start apostille or consular authentication early, even at application stage. Follow both official clocks: procedure originals by post within 10 days after enrollment, and required documents end-of-enrollment-month cancel risk if apostilled or consular certificates are not submitted. Use the latest instructions GIST gives successful applicants.
• If you need a matriculation-fee waiver for financial difficulty, use the waiver fields in the online form and upload the prescribed recommendation letter from your department chair; GIST’s application procedure states the Admissions Committee reviews it with the admission decision, subject to GIST’s review. Do not treat exemption as automatic.

FAQ

Is the GIST graduate scholarship a separate application?

No. Official FAQ: all international graduate students are granted the GIST scholarship without any separate application process.

What tuition support is published?

Tuition fully supported: 3,607,000 won per semester (scholarships page checked 25 September 2026).

Is there a matriculation fee?

Yes. 680,000 won one-time, charged to newly admitted students who enroll. It is non-refundable. Some students may be exempt, and applicants with financial difficulties can request a waiver through the online form for Admissions Committee review (Application Procedure).

What gates apply to monthly allowances?

Student and meal allowances: at least 9 credits completed in the previous semester. International student allowance (120,000 won/month): previous-semester GPA 3.0 or higher out of 4.5. GIST describes these against the previous semester and publishes no first-term exception; do not guess when payment begins. Official stipend rows are M.S. and Ph.D.; integrated M.S./Ph.D. students should confirm the rate with their department.

Are research assistantship amounts guaranteed?

No personal guarantee is published. GIST lists averages as of 2022 for students participating in research projects: 6,400,000 won/year (M.S.) and 13,740,000 won/year (Ph.D.).

When is the Spring 2027 deadline?

7 October 2026, 17:00 KST (application opened 7 September 2026, 10:00 KST). Result notification: 4 December 2026. Enrollment deadline: 4 January 2027. Dates may change.

What English scores are accepted?

TOEFL iBT 80, TOEFL PBT 550, IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEIC 750, or NEW TEPS 285, taken within two years before the deadline. Exemptions exist for native-born citizens of Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK, or the USA, and (with prior GIST approval) for bachelor or advanced degrees from universities physically in those countries.

Can I apply without an official English score?

As of 2022 on the scholarships page: graduate single (Bldg. 8) 140,000 won/month with 150,000 deposit; doubles 80,000 (Bldg. 1-7), 95,000 (Bldg. 8), or 115,000 (Bldg. 9) won/month; married E/F before renovation 125,000 with 300,000 deposit; married E/F after renovation 185,000 with 600,000 deposit; married G 175,000 with 600,000 deposit. Waiting may be long; fees increase yearly; utilities separate; wallpaper/flooring extras possible.
